Haiti or Quiskeya (Country of Mountains)
Haiti has eight million people and its capital city Porte-au-Prince has one million people, most of them living in tents. When the earthquake came on January 12, 2010, it killed 300,000 people and destroyed most of the houses, including the presidential palace. Cyclone Thomas added more misery to the life of the local population. Cholera and political elections have contributed to more distress, unrest and uncertainty in the life of orphans, pregnant women, youth, and 90 % unemployed people.
With this background, nobody expects to see joy, hope and faith in the country. And yet my experience has been totally the opposite. Quiskeya is the country of heroes and giants in faith in God. It is not unusual to hear people sing “How Great Thou Art” at 4 a.m. or cry out to God all night long. The church that we met is strong and well. After my preaching, the Lord allowed 30 people to commit themselves to cross-cultural outreach. There are 50,000-80,000 nongovernmental organizations (NGO’s) in Quiskeya. All the workers to these NGO’s are far from being Christians. It is possible to reach them out for Jesus Christ. This is what pastor Herod is going to do in discipling his church in mission.
The felt need in Quiskeya is a fivefold one: comfort, water, shelter, food, and health. Many local people are convinced that God is the only one who can transform all these felt needs into satisfaction. Jesus is the one giving several locals hope. His transforming power is what churches are expecting in order to avoid violence, selfishness, and indifference in the country. Much like Abraham and Sarah, out of tents in “Cite Soleil” could also rise transforming lives for a new sunrise in Porte-au-Prince and beyond (Hebrews 11:9). Join us in prayer for the restoration of Porte-au-Prince.
